Guitarist, composer, and producer Phil Lewis has worked with a wide variety of artists ranging from funk drummer Gerry Brown, to Latin jazz trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez, to arranger Lalo Schifrin, to Motown songwriter Lamont Dozier.
Born in New Jersey and educated at UCLA, Berklee College of Music, and the Institute of Audio Research, his early years were spent on the East Coast, playing casuals and rock 'n' roll. He was one of the founding members of 80s roots rock combo, the Sharkskins. In 1990 he relocated to California to work as a MIDI engineer, songwriter, and guitarist.
Since the late 90s he has focused on playing and producing contemporary instrumental music, a style sometimes termed "melodic jazz." His group, the Phil Lewis Quartet, can be heard performing at assorted Southern California venues. Their most recent CD, The Bitter Suite, was released in 2011 and is available at CD Baby, iTunes, and Amazon.
